Magnetic Bearing

The Magnetic Bearing System (MBS) is a tool for demonstration of industrial application of the Magnetic Levitation technology. The magnetic bearing stands to be used in many industrial applications like: pumps, compressors, flywheels, etc. This three degrees of freedom system is a test-rig for teaching of control systems, signal analysis, and real-time control applications. The MBS is a nonlinear, open-loop unstable and time varying dynamical system. The basic principle of MBS operation is to apply the voltage to electromagnets to keep a ferromagnetic rotor levitated. The rotor position is determined by two perpendicularly located proximity sensors. Additionally the coil currents are measured to explore identification and control strategies.
